The Beaten Path

A ground-based, acrobatic collaboration between circus artist Mariel Romero Mendez, exploring the intersections of the immigrant experience, family ties, and creativity. We use the invented apparatus of the wheelbarrow, created by Mariel, to guide the audience through our past, present, and future. It becomes the symbolic representation of the manual labor that is required to carve a living from a world that has already deemed you as other. We examine the ways our traditions have shaped us, the worlds we have adopted to survive, and the desire to create despite it all.
